Looking back on it now, it seems like a dream — my year off after university, travelling the world. The best bit was definitely Indonesia. Intuition
(1) told me, even before I left, that Indonesia was where something special was about to happen.
A friend of mine (2) was cycling through China with paintbrushes and a sketch pad, and we
(3) had arranged to meet in Bali.
We (4) stayed on the beach for a day and then decided that what we really needed was more of a cross-Indonesia adventure. So we
(5) set off for the island of Lombok. And it was there that I saw him.
He (6) was sitting with his back to me under the shade of a palm tree,
(7) looking out to sea.
He turned and smiled, which at once left me incapable of even
(8) thinking of moving on to another island.
And that is how I stayed for six months in the same place.

What do you know about Chinese beliefs about yin and yang?
- Yin and yang is a fundamental concept in Chinese philosophy, representing the balance of opposites in the universe. Yin is associated with darkness, femininity, and passivity, while yang represents light, masculinity, and activity. In traditional Chinese medicine and food culture, maintaining a balance between yin and yang is believed to promote good health.
In what ways can what we eat or drink sometimes have a negative impact on health?
- Unhealthy food choices can lead to various health problems. For example, consuming too much fast food or processed food high in fats, sugars, and salt can increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Drinking excessive amounts of sugary drinks or alcohol can also harm the liver and overall health. Additionally, food allergies or intolerances, such as lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity, can cause digestive and immune system issues.
What situations can you think of when food has had a dramatic impact on history?
- Food shortages and famines have played significant roles in shaping history. For example:
- The Irish Potato Famine (1845–1852) led to mass starvation and migration.
- The Great Depression (1929–1939) caused widespread food insecurity.
- The Green Revolution (1940s–1960s) dramatically increased food production and helped prevent famines in many developing countries.
- The rationing of food during World War II affected economies and social structures worldwide.
How many ways can you think of in which science has affected food production?
- Science has revolutionized food production in many ways, including:
- Genetic Modification (GMOs): Scientists have created genetically modified crops that are more resistant to pests and harsh climates.
- Hydroponics and Vertical Farming: These technologies allow crops to be grown without soil, using nutrient-rich water solutions.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation: AI helps optimize farming by predicting weather conditions and monitoring soil health.
- Food Preservation Techniques: Advances in freezing, refrigeration, and packaging have extended the shelf life of food.
- Alternative Proteins: The development of lab-grown meat and plant-based protein alternatives helps reduce the environmental impact of meat production.

Read this story. There are lots of contradictions in it. Find them.
My mate Stuart is a funny bloke (man). He’s an insomniac, he’s dyslexic, and he’s an atheist.
He’s single, unemployed, and lives all alone in a small basement flat
without even a pet for company. Also he’s vegetarian and teetotal (does not drink alcohol), and he doesn’t touch caffeine. He’s pretty anti-social, actually.
I went round to see him last Sunday. As I walked up the drive (a piece of hard ground that leads from the road to the front of a house or other building), his dog started barking. His wife answered the door, and we went upstairs to their living room. He was in a bad mood because he had overslept that morning and had been late for church. He had a bit of a hangover, as well.
Over a cup of coffee, he told me about the wild party that they’d had at his house the night before. They’d had a barbecue in the garden with hamburgers and hotdogs.
One of his favorite pastimes is crosswords, and he spends all his lunch break at work doing them.
“So how are you, Stuart?” I asked him the other day.
“KO, mate, KO. How about you?”
Anyway, as I said, Stuart’s an insomniac, dyslexic, atheist. So the joke is that he lies awake all night wondering about the existence of dog. Get it?
- Living Situation – At first, the narrator says Stuart is single, unemployed, and lives alone in a small basement flat. But later, he is described as having a wife, a dog, and a house with a garden.
- Diet and Drinking Habits – The narrator states that Stuart is vegetarian and teetotal (doesn’t drink alcohol), but later mentions that Stuart had a hangover (which implies he drank alcohol) and had a barbecue with hamburgers and hotdogs (which aren’t vegetarian).
- Personality and Social Life – The narrator claims that Stuart is anti-social, yet he hosts a wild party at his house.
- Insomnia vs. Oversleeping – Stuart is described as an insomniac (someone who struggles to sleep), yet he overslept and was late for church.
- Dyslexic Yet Loves Crosswords – Dyslexia makes reading and word-based activities difficult, but Stuart enjoys doing crosswords during his lunch break.
- Atheist Yet Attends Church – The narrator calls Stuart an atheist, yet Stuart was late for church, implying he attends religious services.
- Unemployed Yet Has a Lunch Break – Stuart is said to be unemployed, but later, it is mentioned that he spends his lunch break at work doing crosswords.
The final joke at the end is a play on words: because Stuart is dyslexic, he supposedly wonders about the existence of “dog” instead of “God.”
